Best Overall: Progressive
Possibly the most well-known insurer in the country, Progressive has earned its reputation. With nearly unbeatable pricing, quick customer response teams, and a wide breadth of coverage available, they had to top our list this time. So many drivers go with Progressive because they offer affordable, quality coverage that’s easy to get started with, and that’s not something we can argue with.
Who are they best for? All driver types, higher or average credit scores, relatively clean driving records, drivers looking to save on insurance
Best for Customer Service: Allstate
As one of the oldest and largest insurers in the nation, it’s no wonder that Allstate maintains its spot as one of the best carriers overall. Customer service is one category this company shines in. Customers rave about how helpful the Allstate staff is, and how well their claims are responded to. If customer service is a big deal to you, take a look at Allstate.

Best for Pricing: Safe Auto
Safe Auto’s name always comes up in conversations about price, and for good reason. They consistently offer low insurance rates, even to drivers who’d typically have to pay more -- this company is actually catered to nonstandard drivers, and that’s a huge win in our book.
Who are they best for? “Nonstandard” drivers with lower credit scores, accidents or incidents on their driving record, drivers under 25:
Best for Telematics: Root
One of the newer carriers on the scene, Root has made a big impact when it comes to telematics. Root’s pricing is based on your active driving behavior. They use an app on your phone to continuously measure your driving and offer you rates on that basis. Essentially, the safer you drive, the less you’ll pay.
Who are they best for? Drivers who drive less than 7,000 miles per year, drivers with a clean record.
Best for Military: USAA
There’s no doubt that USAA is still the best when it comes to current military or veteran drivers. They offer the best prices, discounts, and most tailored coverage for this group -- they even have deployment-specific coverage. As a bonus, this company also serves drivers whose parents served in the military.
